MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — In a historic ceremony broadcast live on French television, the first gay couple to marry in France said "oui," then sealed the deal with a lengthy and very public kiss.

Hundreds of invited guests including a government minister gathered for the moving ceremony Wednesday inside city hall in southern French city of Montpellier. Hundreds more flocked to the square outside the building as Vincent Autin, 40, and his 30-year-old partner, Bruno Boileau, were wed.

The politically charged ceremony was held under tight police surveillance — a stark reminder of the months of bruising opposition to the new gay marriage law that French lawmakers passed earlier this month.

Although the marriage itself went undisrupted, outside the city hall it was not trouble-free. A plainclothes policeman dragged back one protester on Wednesday who shouted threats and tried to approach the couple as they were being escorted into the building, before the ceremony. Police also used tear gas to push back a small group of demonstrators who gathered behind the city hall.

"Even if we have passed the hurdle of equality, there are still more battles to fight... But for now, it's a moment for festivity, for love," Autin said after exchanging vows. Some cried, others smiled as Frank Sinatra's hit "Love and Marriage" blasted out, marking them tying the knot.

The two men then walked hand-in-hand to the city hall balcony to wave to well-wishers alongside Montpellier Mayor Helene Mandroux, who officiated at the ceremony. Smiling proudly, Mandroux called the marriage a "historic moment" and "a stage in the modernization of our country."

The two men, who will adopt the names "Messieurs Bruno et Vincent Boileau-Autin," were holding a separate, private ceremony later Wednesday for close friends and family.

"Many people have been waiting for this law on marriage and adoption. Now, it's done. Many people are going to be doing as we did, and celebrating their unions... We are very pleased and honored," said Boileau.

It is not clear yet when the first gay adoption will take place.

News of the marriage will not be welcomed in every corner of France. Just last Sunday, tens of thousands of people protested fiercely in Paris against the new gay marriage law, demonstrations that ended with riot police shooting tear gas.

Bus Preacher Beaten To Coma In Lagos After Condoms Fall From Bible

A bus preacher was almost lynched on Saturday morning at Toyota Bus stop, in front of the popular Ladipo Spare parts market, when some condoms allegedly fell out of his bible as he preached the ‘Word of God’.

DailyPost gathered that the self acclaimed Man of God was dragged out of the commercial bus and beaten into a pulp before he was rescued by some policemen.

According to information made available to DailyPost, the Pastor had embarked on his journey from Apapa and proceeded to preach to the people on the bus, using very strong words like “If you wear trouser you’ll go to hell! The Devil invented Make up! Weave-on is from Marine Kingdom! If you have pre-marital sex you will burn in hell and your skin will peel!”

It was learnt that the people in the bus were so moved and some started falling under the anointing.

According to an eye witness, Mr. John Mbakogu, who was on his way to his shop at Ladipo, “People were just falling as he was laying hands. One man almost fell out of the bus under the influence of the Spirit. It was amazing until he raised his hands to cast the demons out of one girl, and 2 Durex condoms fell out”

“The angry men in the bus who had been having pangs of guilt due to the pastor’s preaching about sex suddenly got really angry and pounced on him, who all of a sudden started shouting, I also preach safe sex! Safe sex is good!”

Man Beats Wife To Death Over N500 In Lagos

A man identified as Gbadebo Elegbede, in Abule Egba area of Lagos State, on Monday morning, allegedly beat his wife to death over a disagreement that started from missing N500 note.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the incident reportedly occurred at Oronna Street, Off Puposola Street, Abule Egba area of the state, where the 60-year-old Elegbede raised the alarm over his missing N500, which he claimed to have kept in their room.

He had reportedly accused one of the sons of the deceased of being responsible for the missing money, after which the deceased defended her son, which then led to a serious argument between duo and subsequently to a fierce scuffle between them.

It was gathered that the man allegedly hit the woman with an unnamed object, which made her to fall to the ground with blood gushing out of her mouth, and the 17-year-old son, Johnson, who the father accused of stealing the N500 came in and met the lifeless body of his mother.

The suspect was said to have locked the lifeless body of his wife in his apartment and prevented even her relatives from seeing the body, insisting that she owned her “whether dead or alive.”

A relative of the deceased, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune, said “since he did not allow us see the corpse, we are now back in Ogun State. We are confused as to what to do whether to report the matter to the police in Ogun State or in Lagos State.

Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), an Islamic group which claims to be committed to the enforcement of Shariah law in West Africa, has claimed responsibility for a twin suicide bombing attack this morning at the Nigerian/Niger border in which over 20 Nigerien soldiers were killed.

A journalist in transit in the area told Sahara Reporters that the terrorists also injured about 15 other soldiers, while four of their own were killed.

The terrorists struck in a military barracks in Agades, one of the major cities in Niger Republic, while another group belonging to the same group struck in a uranium plant in Arlit.

According to the journalists, the suicide bombers arrived in a bomb-laden car and forced their way into the military facility.

The journalist also said that more Nigerian troops have been deployed to the Niger-Nigerian border since yesterday, and that today’s bombings may also alert the Nigerian authorities to further strengthen the security situation.

A Miami man briefly wrestled with and ultimately used a knife to kill a Burmese python measuring 18 feet, 8 inches.

That sets a state record for pythons captured or killed in the wild. The previous record measured 17 feet, 7 inches.

Jason Leon was not hunting pythons but, while driving late at night recently in southeast Miami-Dade County, he and a friend spotted about 3 feet of snake protruding from the brush.
Leon applied the brakes, climbed out of the car, grabbed the visible portion of the snake, and began hauling it onto the road.

The giant constrictor responded by trying to wrap its body around one of Leon’s legs, but he was able to dispatch the reptile with a knife.

Burmese pythons are native to grassy marshes of Southeast Asia and can grow to about 23 feet and weigh up to about 200 pounds.
In Florida, where they’ve been released as pets and escaped from wildlife facilities, there are thousands of them, mostly within the Everglades ecosystem.

As such a large and voracious invasive species, they’re a threat to native wildlife. The state would like to eradicate them, if that were possible.

Leon, meanwhile, is being praised.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a news release, in which exotic species specialist Kristen Sommers stated:

“The FWC is grateful to him for both safety removing such a large Burmese python and for reporting its capture…With the help of people like Mr. Leon and our ongoing partnerships with other agencies, the FWC is advancing what we know about Burmese pythons in Florida.”

Leon, who said he once owned Burmese pythons and has experience handling the nonpoisonous snakes, reported the capture via a hotline used for reporting exotic species.

The python was delivered to the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center where it was measured and a necropsy was performed.

In all modesty, Writing hit songs for my colleagues like ‘Limpopo’ by KCee and Omotola Ekeinde, recording my own songs (working on a new single), still promoting my new video for ‘I’m in love’ remix with Olamide as well readying another video possibly for my track with Timaya would be a lot to combine with a relationship, at this point.

So what happened? The picture was taken on my birthday which took place at Elegushi beach late at night hence it was not complimentary (on a lighter note, I am quite a good looking man so is Uche, very good looking lady! that picture didn’t do us justice) We were partying which should explain the circumstance the picture was taken.

160 Nigerian Students Now Begging In Russia

Over 160 Nigerian students who are on the federal government scholarship in Russia are now begging to survive due to lack the non-payment of their allowances in the last six months, it was revealed yesterday.

This revelation was made yesterday by the leader of the Association of the Federal Government Doctoral Candidates in Russia, Godwin Ezinkwo, during an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs.

Ezinkwo who stated that there are about 150 under graduate and 10 post-graduate students currently studying in Russia on the FG scholarship said that this is the worst form of scholarship by the Nigerian government.

Ezinkwo informed the committee that for six months now, they have not been paid their allowances, a situation that made them to beg their counterparts from other African countries like Ghana, Zimbabwe and the rest for assistance.

He said that the students also suffer in terms of accommodation because most of them are yet to pay for their houses, adding that they currently face eviction.

“Russia is a very hostile country in terms of weather and other things. It is very embarrassing and difficult to cope. Nigerian students are now living at the mercy of other African scholarship students like Ghana, Zimbabwe and all that. They lend money to us, so Nigerian students are like beggars. They’re begging, if one has to use that word. It’s as bad; begging other students from African countries. It’s demoralizing.

We also have to bring up the issue of accommodation. The agreement in its raw form provides accommodation for students, but unfortunately some of the host countries do not honour this agreement. Students are made to pay for accommodation, but they’re unable to pay for the accommodation, because their stipends and remittances for at least six months have not been paid. As I speak to you now, students are going to be evicted from their hostels because they cannot pay for the accommodation,” he said.

“We have the issue of medical insurance. Because the allowances for all these have not been remitted, students are also going to be evicted, because you cannot stay in somebody’s hostel if you’re not medically certified,” he said.

He said that they had written several letters to see the Nigerian ambassador to Russia in order to have a one-on-one interaction with him on their plight but in vain.

“With due respect, this is the worst form of scholarship obtainable from Nigeria when you take a look at scholarship programmes such as the PTDF, NUC Presidential Scholarship, TETfund, NDDC, ITF and even state scholarship programmes. The irony of the whole situation is that students are sent to one of the most expensive places in the world with the worst welfare package,” he said.

Chairman of the committee, Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN, Lagos) assured that the House would do everything within its reach to unravel the matter in order to help the students.

“It is shameful that Nigerian students that are sent on scholarship to other countries have resorted to begging. It is really a sad commentary. You don’t deserve this kind of treatment. We should be ashamed that this is happening. How can you be good ambassadors if you’re treated this way?

“We are going to do our work. We’ll meet with the ministry of education and the relevant stakeholders and find out what the real situation is. We will get back to you when we finish our findings” she said.

 The police in Imo have arrested one Chimezie Osuigwe, a retired vice-principal, for the alleged murder of his 78-year-old mother in 2003.

Osuigwe was arrested after the embalmed body of the septuagenarian was discovered in a cupboard at his house by a family member.

According to Mr Musa Katsina, the Commissioner of Police in Imo, the woman, Mrs Lucy Osuigwe, was declared missing since 2003.

Katsina told newsmen at the house in Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area on Monday that the embalmed body had been kept in that condition since 2003.

“The corpse of Mrs Lucy Osuigwe, who was declared missing in 2003 was found in a large cupboard inside a shrine in a private room in a circumstance depicting ritual practice.

“The embalmed body, which was kept in that condition for about 10 years is believed to have been placed in the wardrobe by her son, Dr Chimezie Osuigwe, a devotee of the Guru Maharaji Sect.

“Preliminary assessment of the scene of crime revealed that the woman must have been murdered by the son for ritual purposes,” he said.

The commissioner said that plans were on to arrest other members of the sect who visit Osuigwe’s shrine.

He said the body would be handed over to the forensic team of the command to determine the cause of death.

He also said the suspect would be held for first degree murder until the cause of death was established.

The Nigerian film industry has come under fire over the warped values it espouses. Most Nigerians either love or hate Nollywood, with not too many occupying the middle ground. In primary school, children play clapping games while singing songs about Living in Bondage, considered the first Nollywood blockbuster, and the film that launched the Nigerian cinema industry.
However, as the industry grew, parents began to forbid their children to watch Nigerian movies due to the abundant depictions of rituals or “juju”. Still Nollywood continued its ascent, and it is not until when a Nigerian goes outside that he realise how much of an influence Nollywood has.

But while many criticise the industry for its obsession with witchcraft, there’s been a lot less criticism about the way in which women are portrayed and treated in these movies. And when people discuss the female characters, the focus is largely on how scantily dressed they are, and what a bad influence they are on young women. For a country that prides itself on being morally righteous and religious, you can’t help but wonder what kind of morals most Nollywood movies are trying to communicate.
If Nollywood is a reflection of Nigerian society, then what it reveals doesn’t say much about how Nigerians view women. Nollywood movies feature heavy doses of sexism that even the least feminist Nigerian is likely to pick up on. In movies such as Blackberry Babes, White Hunters and Fazebook Babes, women are depicted as cold and two-timing, always in search of a rich man or sugar daddy, thus creating a world in which men are seemingly oppressed by women who use them only for financial gain. Others do their bit in normalising rape culture in Nigeria and generating sympathy for rapists and abusers.
I have personally sat through movies that had “romantic” storylines in which women fell in love with their rapists! Assertive women who take matters into their own hands, or who are ambitious and focus on their careers – always get the short end of the stick. Another trope involves women and abortions. Abortion is illegal in Nigeria, and there are women who go through risky procedures to have them done. However, in these movies, any woman who has an abortion either dies or ends up unable to have children. When Nollywood tries to highlight the problem of domestic violence in Nigeria and the challenges faced by abused women, the result usually falls short of the stated aim.
For example, in A Private Storm, the filmmaker draws more sympathy for the abusive husband than for his battered wife. One has to ask why did the filmmakers chose to tell the story from the male perspective? A petition in Lagos started by Bayo Olupohunda, is attracting signatures from all over the world, which suggests more people are becoming aware of the problem. Olupohunda notes that Nollywood “movies are dominated by scenes of sex and extreme violence against women”, and concludes that that Nollywood scripts perpetuate violence against women while cementing the longstanding patriarchal narrative. While we wait for Nollywood to get it right when it comes to women, we can enjoy filmmaker and video artist Zina Saro-Wiwa’s “alt-Nollywood” short film, Phyllis, a breath of fresh air. In Phyllis, the tropes concerning women in Nollywood are subverted.
The character Phyllis is a woman who lives alone, making her independent in a country where women who are independent and single still get labelled as “witches” or prostitute. She is a psychic vampire trying to become human through wigs, Jesus and Nollywood. The supernatural is present in Phyllis – a reference to Nollywood – yet different because the story is told from the perspective of the “witch”. Phyllis is complex in a way that most Nollywood movies do not have the time for, which I suppose isn’t surprising that it is primarily a money making industry.
I’m not alone in hoping Phyllis provides inspiration for home-based Nollywood filmmakers, though I don’t think Nollywood filmmakers are quite ready to take such a big step. In the meantime, one can hope that Nollywood 2.0 will turn out to be good news for women in Nigeria as a whole – and will do at least a bit more to challenge patriarchy in Nigeria. (This is Africa).

JAMB Releases 2013 UTME Results, Only 10 Students Scored Above 300

 

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results. The board, however, withheld 12,110 results for possible disciplinary action.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, announced this at a news conference on the release of the results in Bwari, FCT,  Friday May 3rd.
The registrar said after thorough processing of answer scripts of the candidates who sat for the examination, the board discovered some forms of malpractice perpetuated during the conduct of the examination.
“However, the results of 68,309 candidates from various centres are undergoing further screening to ascertain the culpability of 12,110 candidates’ results.
A total of 1,629,102 candidates applied to sit for the Paper Pencil Test (PPT), while 15,008 candidates applied for the Dual Based Test, bringing the number of candidates  to 1,644,110.
“The general performance of candidates in this year’s examination shows remarkable improvement compared with last year.
“Ten candidates scored 300 marks and above, while 127,017 candidates scored between 1-159 marks.
“About 40,692 candidates’ results were invalid due to either multiple shading or no shading at all.  After processing all the results, the board also discovered that about 47,974 candidates were absent.“
The registrar assured the candidates that their results could be accessed on the JAMB Website: www.myjambresult.com using their registration numbers.
He said about 40 centres would be screened to ascertain their culpability and warned the public against Internet fraudsters.
“Information reaching JAMB shows Internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other. This is pure deceit, the public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data.www.myjambresult.com

REVEALED: It Seems The Koko Master, D’banj Begged Olamide For A Collaboration

 

A D’BANJ topic at this point in time would arouse mixed feelings, especially amongst and within fans and pundits. Many would never come to an agreement while some would rather rest the case for another day. We cannot rule out the fact that most people including yours truly are yet to phantom the reality that the ‘Koko Master’ and his erstwhile buddy, Don Jazzy are no longer together – A creative and business divorce.
The breakup cleared arguments about Don Jazzy as a major influence and source of the quality and quantity of music that came from D’Banj. The source of the music was the least of my problem – I just loved what I heard from production to vocals and lyrics. Everything was fine. There’s no point going into the obvious – we all know the breakup story. The last song that was officially promoted on Mo’hits was “Oliver Twist”. It was and still is a monster hit across the world.
Before the rise of Mo’hits, D’Banj released his first set of songs “Kiss Me Again” ft. Ruggedman, “One More Time” and “Gba Si Be” ft. Abounce on OJB’s Silver Tones’ imprint.
The advent of Mo’hits and the growth of the D’Banj brand only gave ‘collabo access’ to label mates and close friends like Ikechukwu (Whine Am Well), Kas (Fimile Remix) and Banky W (Lagos Party Remix). The dynasty was very rigid in collaboration-related matters. We weren’t sure if it was Don Jazzy’s plot to protect D’Banj’s creative weakness or the latter’s personal choice. However, the release of “Mr. Endowed Remix” with Snoop Dogg in 2010 and the Kanye West-Good Music merger confirmed that D’Banj was not about the local league. He had a bigger dream.
Going over the changes that has transpired after Mo’hits’ breakup will be over-flogging the issue. A significant change on D’Banj’s side is his sudden presence on other artiste’s songs. The first was “Bad Pass (Tony Montana)” by Naeto C, followed by Iyanya’s “Kukere Remix”. The fact that these songs were already solo hits made his input less relevant especially at a time when fans and the industry at large expect more. Fally Ipupa was featured on “We The Best”, off D’Banj’s DKM Album, but the arrangement made it sound like D’Banj was the one featured.
So D’Banj is also cutting in on Olamide’s recent buzz and they have a song that will be released any time soon. I reckon this is a strategy of some sort to either sustain relevance or a random attempt to cop another hit outside Don Jazzy’s works.
The last Nation’s Cup, placed him on the Continent’s spotlight again but instead of unveiling a new song on that platform, he continues with the Don Jazzy produced “Oliver Twist”. In my opinion, the “Scape Goat Remix” with Kanye West is a waste of an opportunity. Additions like that are done when you are just paying (one off) for the guy to voice a verse or two on your already made song, but when you are a signed artiste on Good Music (especially when it’s a paid merger), creative time should be spent on a song for the sake of the fans and listening community.
Maybe it’s too early to expect much from D’Banj but I am worried for him already. This is a man who has three flawless albums and countless hit songs on his belt. Everything he touched in the past was gold and if one artiste was literally way ahead of his time, it was D’Banj. He is the only artiste who would drop his Glo Ambassadorship due to complications from renewal talks and fee. Even at that, the guy was not blabbing when he said “I make 10 million in a week…” on “Gbono Feli Feli” (2008). He is still one of the most awarded artistes of the last decade. I mean, if he drops the music today, his achievement may not be surpassed in years to come.
The mass influx of sounds and artistes in Nigeria today is enough to distract the most loyal of fans. Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie already has a lot of fans in Nigeria; same way new artistes are sprawling up every day to have a share of the cake.

The Woman who wrecked Kate Henshaws Marriage

The buzz about Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw and her better half of 12 years, Roderick James Nuttal’s crashed marriage may have come and gone but one thing that is still shrouded in secrecy is the real reason behind the unexpected separation from one of the then best couples in the entertainment industry.
It would be recalled that there were serious of tales that trailed the breakup and one of them was that her hubby who’s the Managing Director of Ledrop Nigeria Ltd (agents for Jack Daniels and Piper Hiedsieck) was romancing his secretary whose name was unknown, hence our curiosity to get to the root of the story.
This office after several investigations discovered that the said secretary is the main architect of the crashed union. Her name, we can exclusively disclose is Angela Gordon a twenty four years old pretty lady from the South South part of the country. Angela according to our source is a staff at Mr. Nuttal’s company located at Ligali Ayorinde, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The duo according to the story kicked off a secret romance which was fueled by Angela’s mum three years ago while kate’s marriage with her husband was still intact until the actress got wind of their affair.
The news of the romance we reliably learnt was brought to Kate’s notice by one of the aggrieved staff of her husband when it was obvious Angela was towing the part of a second wife. The revelation we learnt resulted to a surprise visit to her hubby’s office. “Aunty Kate stormed her husband’s office on this fateful evening unannounced and was shocked to find her husband with Angela in an uncompromising position”, “and I also learnt that she had initially lied that she was on a movie set in Lekki before paying the unwelcomed visit that ended their union”, the source revealed.
We further squealed that serious argument ensued between the two ladies and Mr. Nuttal we learnt had to confirm his affair with his secretary to his wife who became perplexed immediately. Our grapevine also added that the height of it was when Kate’s hubby gave her an option of either accepting things as it were or bow out of the marriage if she can’t stand his relationship with Angela.
The outcome of the storm however was the official statement from the estranged couple months later announcing their separation without any concrete reason when it was obvious the marriage could not go on.
Angela now cruises a black Range Rover Sport and lives in a cozy 3-bedroom apartment around Lekki phase 1 courtesy of her white lover. The new madam of the house as she’s popularly called by friends also allegedly miscarried a baby for Nuttal around late last year 2012 while the duo is also said to be flaunting their romance since the couple went their separate ways with Angela’s mum being her backbone.
In our facts finding mission, this office got in touch with Kate Henshaw who told us to feel free to ask her any question, she however denied the angle of the secretary, “No, that’s not the fact, Mr. Nuttal’s secretary is Yetunde and she has nothing to do with this, but for Angela, I don’t have much to say on this but I know her, she’s one of the Sales girls, so thanks for getting in touch all the same”, she ended in a final tone. Efforts to speak to Mr. Nuttal proved abortive as at press time. We shall be bringing her pictures in our next edition as we unfold more facts of the romance.
